Yikes, what say you SW?

"Concord is one of Sony's biggest mistakes in game development, with the game being pulled offline and refunded just two weeks after it launched. Concord aimed to be the premium in a sea of free-to-play hero shooters. However, the numbers weren't there, and it received a 1.8 Metacritic User score. In a recent Sacred Symbols podcast episode, Colin Moriarty mentioned that they had spoken to one of the staff members who worked on Concord at Firewalk Studios and spoke "extensively for a long time" about Concord and its situation.

The whole situation was doomed from the start, with the game being overhyped internally and referred to as "the future of PlayStation." That statement could be correct to some degree, but would more so imply the future of PlayStation is going downhill along with Concord. The game was so hyped up within the studio and at PlayStation, that there was a dev culture of "toxic positivity," which didn't allow for any negative feedback to be given at any point.

While it was estimated at a much lower number, Concord cost about $400 million to make, leaving Sony a pretty hefty void after the game failed to perform as expected. Concord was in development for a couple of years, reaching an Alpha state in late 2023. At that point, Sony didn't even own Firewalk Studios, but they had been working alongside them to create this title since 2020 or 2021. Moriarty mentions that before it had even reached the Alpha state, they had already spent at least $200 million on developing the game, which is a huge amount of money to sink into something that isn't even close to being released to the public. Moriarty mentions that it's uncertain how much of that money came from the original studio that was developing Concord and how much of it came from Sony.

Between the Alpha period and the game's release, Sony spent another $200 million on Concord. According to the employee who spoke to Moriarty, by the time the game was showcased to a public audience, it was in a "laughable state," and it looked so terrible that Sony felt they had to spend more money to make the product viable. By the end of the first quarter of 2023, the game was still incredibly unfinished, so Sony paid a significant sum of money and outsourced the game to other studios to try and put the product together.

Once the game was released, Sony made just about $1 million in gross revenue but then refunded everything. This is one of Sony's biggest losses on the market, with games such as The Last of Us Part 2 and Spider-Man costing less than Concord but being significantly more successful.

Toxic positivity is a new one 😂

Sounds like PlayStation got fooled by a good pitch meeting. But instead of correcting their mistake early on, they doubled the funding in order to rush a meh game out. Making the situation many times worse. Yeah, a few people are gonna be looking for a new job pretty soon

I'm less interested in the tally and more intrigued by the "toxic positivity" claim. Yeah, it certainly does feel like a game made out of hubris and heads-in-the-clouds self assurance, with seemingly no critical second opinion.

If they had, someone might have pointed out to them that their characters are bland, their concept is generic, they have no USP and they're entering a saturated market that have already left their business model behind.

Hope they learn their lesson, but it is a fool's hope, these companies would make a gold fish seem to have photographic memory in comparison.

That translates to the game under going many direction iterations because the end results doesn't net the cost as is.🤷‍♂️

That doesn't make it any more believable.

Colin also implies they spent nearly the entire budget of HFW just between late 2023 and the release of the game.

The only way I see $400m being true is if it includes the acquisition cost, development costs and, perhaps the long-term debts of the business like the lease or purchase of their office space. But, Colin says it's *only* dev costs. Sorry, this is as real as the Easter Bunny.

Do you even know how many copies you'd have to sell at $40 to break even on a $400m game? This game would need to sell the LTD numbers of games like TLOU, GoW and Spider-Man just to break even. Cmon.

I find it extremely hard to believe this game cost $400 million to make. Even $200 million seems like a massive over-spend based on the scope of the game. I am just not seeing the assets and content that would warrant that kind of money. Whoever worked on this game made away like bandits if Sony wasted all that money.

If that's true then what a waste of money. Sony could've used all that cash to make other games but instead they spent it all for one garbage. At least Astro Bot turned out good.

I am legitimately stunned by the cost when I first read about it.

I don't understand where the money went.

This was a new/young studio, it didn't have a single-player portion (and thus no need for expensive motion capture, voice actors, and so on), and so on and so forth.

I didn't even feel like the marketing campaign was all that extensive, which is often where a lot of money goes.

I feel like a scam was pulled somewhere on Sony...

@navyguy21: I'm a positive person I think, but constructively so. I also try to be honest (but kind), so when something is bad, I say so.

I don't like toxic positivity, it is appropriately named. If there are problems, they need to be addressed; problems are negative, solutions are positive, they cancel each other out to produce something that is neither. Something that is objectively something. If you did your best, that something is probably of high quality. Whether or not it is "good" is up to the consumer, but at the very least they can say "This is a quality product".

That's really all you can do, as someone that produces something: do your best, be honest, accept constructive criticism, and hope that if you put a quality product out people will like it.

Purely speculating, Sony makes what? 50 dollars on a ps5 sale? Does anyone know? They have to sell 8 million ps5s to wipe away the dent to their bottom line against 400 million.

Very possible Sony didn't spend the full 400, given the article I posted above says the dev spent 200 mill pre acquisition. Sony spent the rest... But also, Sony aquired the studio! 😂

People really need to be fired. Like, people at Sony, people at the dev.... That is a massive failure, possibly ever in the medium.

Hard to believe those numbers, the studio is Washington based so team of like 170 heads with avg pay of 180k/y ain't cheap, but the numbers just don't add up. Mass layoff/studio closure most likely, ain't no way Sony is sporting a support studio that expensive to run

Sounds like bullshit. Even the $200m figure was believable only if you counted the projected costs for updates and support for the game for the first few years of it's release - remember, the plan was to release new cinematic story clips every other week or something.

It's like Destiny costing $500m, but only because it was the projected investments for the 10 years of the game's life.

I can't believe those numbers. 400 spent where? There was not big marketing push and the game itself is not a big production. I'm confused.

Edit: I see culture warriors were programmed with a new word. Authenticity! Lmao.

Did the money go to the games' cgi or something?

To make a few heroes in a few maps that can shoot each other with different abilities doesn't cost that amount. It also had like zero marketing.

How? How do you spend 400million on something like that? Assuming it's true, Shareholders at Sony would want to push for an external auditor to come in too take a good long look at where that money went? How does Spiderman 2 cost 260million and Concord cost 400million? Someone it taking the piss. I just really hope it's the Youtube video.

Ignoring the other moronic costs, you should see if your game will even be embraced before also committing to short films and other connected projects.

If the surely doomed Fairgames is another megaproject with spin-off content already in production, it could be 700 million for just two games.
