The Next Xbox Console Generation Could Include A Handheld - Report

Xbox is seemingly taking a new approach.

The next generation of Xbox consoles reportedly could include both a console and a handheld.

According to Windows Central, Microsoft is taking another two-pronged approach to the Xbox hardware market like it did with the Series X and S. The plan is reportedly to have a traditional-style successor to the Series X, as well as a handheld gaming option similar to that of the Steam Deck.

It's currently unclear what this approach would end up looking like, but if the handheld anything like the Steam Deck, players will likely be able to play their digital purchases and bounce between the handheld and console. There likely won't be a separate ecosystem like the 3DS and Wii U or Vita and PS3. There's also the possibility that it could look more like a Switch and have both the console and handheld components work together.

Separately from this report, Microsoft also confirmed that it has plans to celebrate both Xbox and Halo's 25th anniversaries, which are landing in 2026. This current generation has been a strange one. Developers are still making games for last generation's consoles, and the backlash against the PS5 Pro's price puts the traditional console generation cycle into an awkward spot.

Last year, documents regarding Xbox's mid-gen refresh plans were leaked, aiming for a supposed October 2024 release. Microsoft claimed the plans were outdated, but is still indeed releasing a digital-only Xbox Series X.

I doubt they will have both.

Whatever Nin switch 2 will be, xbox will have a 10th gen parity to it, along with a dock that might offer even more performance with increased wattage and maybe cooling, by being docked. As for how powerful it will be.... maybe as powerful as a xbox one 8th gen. They will continue to sale a xbox s/x 9th gen console for many years to come.

That may sound gloomy, but considering how successful steam decks and steam deck like clones have been over the last few years. This might be the smartest move for xbox, resulting in more hardware sales then 9th gen and then some.

Why they would not just make a two versions of a 10th gen consoles (mobile, powerful home), xbox has had trouble with different skus of their consoles since xbox 360. I cannot imagine a future where parity of two differently powerful systems would work for them, considering how poorly the xbox x/s have been. Just asking for more pain or ignoring history.

Personally, I would like for xbox to keep on fighting with a powerful single home console with a mobile like device that can connect to their home console or to the cloud for gaming. The big difference being, bringing out dozens of AAA exclusives like they did 8th gen or like Nintendo is doing. Games are the reason to purchase a console, not the console by itself.

I am a bit worried, if the Xbox 5 regular is a strong device and the Xbox 5 portable is kind of similar to Xbox Series S or Xbox one in strength, then Xbox 5 portable could be a problem.

What if Microsoft requires every game to be released both for Xbox 5 regular and Xbox 5 Portable? (like they do now, every game needs to get a Series S release as well as Series X)

It means multiformat titles would need to be adjusted for both PS6 and Xbox 5 Portable. The developers would need to adjust their games or simplify them to make the games fit on every platform.

The other option is to make games PS6-exclusive (and PC as well). But a developer probably wants to get a game out on Xbox as well.

Or they could just make Xbox Portable its own thing, which i would prefer. (just Xbox Portable, not Xbox 5 Portable) But do we need Xbox Portable AND Switch 2? Perhaps not. Maybe one system is enough. I think with two systems though, you get the option to play (without streaming) a lot of interesting Xbox exclusives on the go. Or just have a lot of Xbox One games or Series S games on the Xbox Portable, it would go a long way. I do not see myself buying a Switch 2 AND an Xbox Portable. I would stick to one of them, probably Switch 2. As well as an Xbox 5 stationary console. But it is too far ahead in the future to decide. Price would also matter. If Xbox portable would be reasonably priced, why not buy it as well as Switch 2 if i am able to afford them?
(Not buying Ps5 Pro though! :) Boooo!! :P )

What's wrong with them? I game on my Android phone and tablet all the time, at home and on the go. No need to enter the mobile system market more than they already have.

Yup. One will be a powerful new box that connects to your TV, the other will be like the Series S, but this time portable (and potentially dock-able like the Switch). Rumors are that Sony are going to do the same thing with the PS6 as there are currently 2 SOC's in development at AMD for Sony.

With Nintendo bringing out a new Switch, and then Steam Deck, I feel like they have a tough fight ahead of them in the handheld realm. The console will be an instant fail. I can't see how that has any chance.

Potential problem if all next-gen Xbox games are required to scale and run on both the big home console and the handheld- it could be like how the Series S is "holding back the generation", but even worse. An even wider gap, where instead of one machine being about 3 times more powerful than the other, it's 6 times or 10 times more powerful.

But maybe it won't be handled this way, where perhaps a dev can choose whether their game runs natively on the handheld or is only cloud streamed to it
