Thunderbolts Poster Gives The Sentry Six Fingers On One Hand

It's the thought that counts, right?

The first trailer for Marvel Studio's Thunderbolts was released Monday morning and seemed to elicit a generally good vibe from fans. The film brings together some of the MCU villains and anti-heroes, and introduces the Sentry (Lewis Pullman), who is making his live-action debut. Sentry also gained an additional finger along the way for some reason on the poster.

A poster was released shortly after the trailer dropped showing the team cramped together in awkward posing, and it's one of the better-designed posters we've seen in recent years. However, fans noticed that AI might have been used to extend the original frame as Bob/Sentry has six fingers on his hand. Something he did not have in the trailer.

No Caption Provided

There is a clear shot of Bob holding up both hands as he meets the team, who give the man a quizzical look when he wanders into the frame in his pajamas. In the poster released, Bob's right hand has six visible fingers. If this is the result of AI, it certainly wouldn't be the first time Marvel has used the technology. The studio previously experimented with generative AI for the opening credits of Secret Invasion.

This version of the Thunderbolts consists of Red Guardian (David Harbour), White Widow/Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), US Agent (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Winter Solider (Sebastian Stan). In the comics, they were members of the Masters of Evil, led by Baron Zemo, who all took superhero aliases to gain the trust of the world.

Thunderbolts hits theaters on May 2, 2025.

I count 5 fingers... Are you using that new math they're teaching these days?

I can't think of any reason why this tech is good or useful to people. The hallucinatory art sucks. Studios get scammed by lazy and fake "artists" who think they are so clever using the tech. Or they just cut the human out completely. To boot, the AI "learns" from the copyrighted material of real artists... who don't get paid.

That's a real, normal hand with 5 fingers. The way it's cut off on the edge of the image just makes it look slightly odd.

Four fingers and one thumb. The thumb is not a finger. Agreed that something is definitely off though and it looks as if he has five fingers.

@allercon: Looks like 4 knuckles attached to the palm...BUT...pinky finger goes off the edge so you cannot see the tip and yet there are still 4 fingertips to count. tracing from knuckle to tip, the index finger gets doubled and has two tips (the knuckle actually looks a little too fat too).

ETA: actually, someone pointed out below that if you look at it as the pinky bending back so the tip comes back into view, then it might be correct.

All that money and they can't afford to pay a real artist.

Or maybe they did and got scammed because the artist used AI.

Either way...lame. I know this is Marvel and Disney we are talking about, but comics are still art. Movies are still art. There should be some sort of appreciation for it when you are responsible for making it.

You can still pursue your capitalistic dreams and maintain a bare minimum of artistic integrity as you milk your fanbase for those sweet, sweet dollars; they're not mutually exclusive.

AI can be a useful tool to supplement labor, but it should not be used in substitute of human creativity.

@mrbojangles25: I despise the AI trend, but to some extent, I can't blame them since they spend so much money making the movies only to get death threats and constant culture war BS thrown at them and at the community to try to ruin anything that triggers the usual suspects. Why spend the money if the product can be ruined for everyone via social media before it is even released or anyone has even seen it?

The fun part is going to be when AI becomes ubiquitous enough that everyone is stupidly, lazily relying on it...all while broken AI is learning from broken AI and starts creating a feedback loop of mistakes and incorrect information, amplifying and mutating and growing the brokenness and disinformation by incorporating it into the algorithms that both function as the information collection and the information "vetting."

Not a good sign of things to come.

Can we get someone in there that at least understands homo sapiens phalanges or a kindergarten education level.

@dushness: Nope, six. The "pinky" goes off-screen while the index finger does a weird thing where it looks like two going up, looks like one for a moment, but then when it is bent over comes out to be two.

Definitely an AI glitch. Gross.

@mrbojangles25: nope, count again. Only four fingers coming out of the hand and then four fingertips.

The knuckle of the pinky is out of frame

@dushness: What is the pinky going out of frame then? Based on the "trajectory" or whatever you want to call it, it doesn't look like it comes back into frame.

It seems like there are six digits in total, one is just off-screen.

I do sort of get where you are coming from, the but index finger is significantly wider than any other digit, and it is also the one furthest in the back, which to me indicates an AI glitch as well.

FYI just debating for fun, not taking this serious :)

*oh you know what it is? The middle finger isn't attached to anything, or it's sprouting from the back of another finger. That's another odd things about this.

So we got 1.) extra-wide index finger in the background (that should be thinner), 2.) extra pinky going off screen and not coming back in, and 3.) middle finger sprouting out of back of another finger coming out of nowhere.

It's like the pinky went off screen and the AI told itself "Hey we need another finger!" and the middle finger "grew" into the photo and then caused the index finger to grow wider. So basically there's like 5 and 3/4 digits on the hand.

@dushness: Hmmm...I see what you're saying...was reading it like the pinky's tip was off the edge too, but you might be right.

@dushness: Looks like people got confused between the knuckles and the finger tips since the middle of the pinky is cut out of the frame.

@maltnut: He has 6... click the image in full scale. If you look at his index finger it is much too wide / fat. This is unnatural looking next to his other fingers. It clearly is meshing two fingers there regardless of how many points you see. It is AI fail.

@CyrusDrake20: I am, his index finger looks normal to me. My index finger is wider than my middle finger too. Not to mention it's the one that has the most in frame, the others are all partially obscured, making direct comparisons difficult.

He has five fingers on his right hand.

I don't know if it's the shading and the angle and the curl that's making people so confused, and at first glance it might seem that way, but on inspection it's pretty obvious that he doesn't have 6 fingers.

@maltnut: Na if you look really close. His pointer finger is behind his middle finger as if it's fused and as you said. Looking at the edge of the poster you can see a partial finger making a total of 6. AI still fails.

@ezio899: He has 4 finger bases and 4 finger tips plus a thumb. I don't see another finger starting past the edge of his sleeve cuff. Are you confused because his fingers are curled?

@maltnut: Yeah I think we're looking at 4 fingers here, but the way they're curled makes the base of the finger look like it belongs to the fingertip above it. This would make you think there's the base of an additional finger at the end of the poster, but looking at it carefully that base then comes back into the poster for the pinky tip.

Not AI, not 5 fingers.

@adrardohan: We had over a decade of them. Their stories are done, man. Continuing a good thing past its natural endpoint is how the MCU got to be such a boring mess in the first place.
