Andrew Garfield Responds To Rumor He's In Spider-Man 4
Garfield doesn't confirm or deny his involvement in the next Spider-Man movie.
Oscar-nominated actor Andrew Garfield has responded to a rumor that he's coming back to play Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man movie from Sony Pictures and Marvel.
Speaking to IndieWire, Garfield didn't straight-up say no. Instead, he danced around the subject just as he did years ago when he was asked again and again if he would be in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Of course, Garfield did end up being in No Way Home, alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. For the next Spider-Man movie, Garfield said people should question what they read on the internet.
"I mean, like the internet is a big place," Garfield said. "I think there's a lot of people who will just say anything to get clicks. So you might have been duped, I'm afraid."
In July, Marvel boss Kevin Feige said the next Spider-Man movie is in the scripting process and that a draft was due "relatively soon." Rumors quickly circulated that Garfield was coming back alongside Maguire and Holland to play a trio of Spider-Men just as they did in No Way Home.
In April, Holland himself commented on the future of series. He said a team of the "best in the business" is currently cooking up ideas for "whatever the story might be" for another film. Holland said he's wary of protecting the legacy of the series.
"Until we've cracked it, we have a legacy to protect," he said. "The third movie was so special in so many ways that we need to make sure we do the right thing."
Before this, Holland said he considered walking away from Spider-Man and passing the baton to someone else to play the character. But Holland is keen to come back for another movie, provided the story is good enough.
"Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing. I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy," Holland said in 2023. "So, I won't make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character."
Holland has starred in three mainline Spider-Man movies so far, including Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Holland has also played Spider-Man in multiple Avengers movies.
In addition to Holland's next Spider-Man movie, a Spider-Woman film is in the works and will be here "sooner than you'd expect."
