The Sims Movie From Margot Robbie's Production Company Confirmed, Will Include Freezer Bunnies
Amazon MGM Studios and EA partner for a movie adaptation of the popular video game.
Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed the development of a film based on The Sims franchise, produced by Margot Robbie's company LuckyChap. The project is directed by Kate Herron (Loki), with a script co-written by Herron and Briony Redman (Doctor Who). The news comes following months of speculation about the adaptation, as announced by EA.
"The Sims will be coming to the big screen," EA Entertainment president Laura Miele said in a statement to Variety on Tuesday. She emphasized that the film aims to build on the game's 25-year legacy and expand the franchise's reach. "It's a testament to the enduring power of this beloved franchise."
Kate Gorman, vice president of The Sims franchise at EA, noted that the film will focus on delivering an authentic Sims experience. "We wanted the right partners and to make an impact the size of something like a Barbie movie," Gorman told Variety.
Gorman also hinted at the inclusion of iconic Sims elements, adding, "There will be Freezer Bunnies. I'm sure a pool without a ladder is somewhere in there, but we haven’t finalized any of those details. But that's the idea, is to say that it lives within this space. It's a nod to all of the amazing play and creation and fun that people have had over the last 25 years within The Sims."
As for the film's plot, details remain undisclosed. The movie marks another major project for LuckyChap, continuing their collaborations with Amazon MGM Studios.
The Sims franchise, developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts, allows players to control virtual characters in an open-world simulation. Players engage their characters in activities ranging from building homes to managing relationships. Since its 2000 release, The Sims has sold nearly 200 million copies worldwide. Check out everything we know about The Sims 5, which has been in early development since 2022.
The Sims movie is one of many, many video-game adaptation movies in the works in the moment. Although the Borderlands movie flopped, it has not cooled Hollywood on exploring future synergies.
